Publisher Square Enix and developer United Front Games are currently hammering away at Triad Wars, an MMO follow-up to the hit action-adventure video game Sleeping Dogs.

If case you haven't had the pleasure of enjoying Sleeping Dogs, the 2012 video game follows the adventures of an undercover cop, trying to root out the criminals in a Hong Kong-based Triad organization.

Sleeping Dogs was originally released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms, and was remastered last year and re-released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 home consoles.

The game is similar to Grand Theft Auto but also throws in some martial arts and parkour into to mix, and was very well met due to its engrossing storyline and exciting gameplay mechanics.

The makers of Sleeping Dogs decided to try their hand at the massively multiplayer online genre with the follow-up to the popular cop drama game, intended to be released as a free-to-play title on PC sometime this year.

The game is currently undergoing a closed beta, and if you want to try your luck at getting in, you can register on the game's website.

This time around you're playing the bad guy

The game was created to offer an alternative to the storyline in Sleeping Dogs, where you played the role of a cop fighting crime, and as such Triad Wars lets you become a criminal mastermind.

The title follows the same open-world design of Sleeping Dogs and features a ton of combat, but also a more strategic layer of choices where you have to formulate a certain plan of action and claim your share of the online city through extortion, money laundering, hacking and whatever else it is that virtual criminals do.

The action takes place in Hong Kong, and your ultimate goal is to become the kingpin of the criminal underworld. You start out by enlisting in one of the city's established gangs, and then grind your way to the top.

For the time being, there is no word on whether Triad Wars will make it to other platforms as well.

If you're curious to see the game in action, you can have a look at the videos below. The first one is made by a Russian gamer, so if you're looking for English commentary, you would be better served by the next ones, showing some developer livestreams.
