The Chaz Bono of today is almost hard to recognize from the Chaz Bono of 2011, who signed up to be on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Incidentally, that was also the moment when he stopped being in denial about his unhealthy weight, he reveals in a new interview with Extra TV.

A video of the interview is available here. Maria Menounos was pleasantly surprised at how “amazing” Chaz looked and, as you can see for yourself, she didn’t think twice about letting him know it too.

Chaz, the transgender son of Cher and Sonny, says he’s lost about 85 pounds (38.5 kg) already. His journey started 2 years ago on DWTS but it couldn’t have gotten the outcome it has without help from The Doctors, which provided him with everything he needed to overhaul his lifestyle, from a nutritionist to a healthy eating plan.

Today, Chaz says, he’s eliminated about 99 percent of grains and dairy from his diet, eating mostly “vegetables, meat, fruit, nuts.” Sweets are completely off-limits as well, and he’ll only have cake once a year, on his birthday.

“I was kind of in denial about how heavy I was, but was ready to do something about it. I was thinking my weight was holding me back from opportunities in my life, and I was worried about my health,” he says of how everything started.

“I feel really good. I feel healthier. I feel lighter. I feel more confident, and I feel really happy,” Chaz tells Maria when she asks him how he’s feeling today.

Of course, having lost so much weight, Chaz also had to go under the knife to have excess skin removed and, while he doesn’t want to go into details, he says the procedure was “not fun” but necessary and totally “worth it.”

Throughout everything, Chaz has had the support of his mother Cher who, right now, is “pretty darn proud.”
