Saturday night, Charlize Theron was honored with the prestigious Vanguard Award at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's (GLAAD), at 17th annual media awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The 30-years-old Theron is considered by the GLAAD community an inspiration for gay and lesbian citizens. An important fact that led to this award was her impersonation of Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 Oscar winning drama "Monster".
The key word of the ceremony was "Understanding", with emphasis on the role movies have in making people aware of the existence of sexual minorities and helping them understand others' sexual orientation.
Charlize Theron's wedding, with her long term boyfriend Stewart Townsend, was allegedly postponed until same sex couples will also have the right to marry in the US.
Theron says "I feel so fortunate that I am in a relationship with a wonderful man."
"I find it incredibly unfair that because of our sexual preference, we have the rights that we have, and that, because of someone else's sexual preference, they don't have those same rights."
Other awards were given to Felicity Huffman, for the role of a transgender American male who seeks reconciliation with his son in transgender drama "Transamerica", and to the themed shows "The L World" and "Will and Grace".
