A new green device, presented last week at the Consumers Electronics Show (CES) 2009, is capable of supplying 100 percent renewable electricity to iPods, cell phones, and other such mobile devices, via the use of electromagnetic induction. Basically, by simply walking, users can get a full charge on their gadgets in about an hour. The nPower PEG (Personal Energy Generator) can also be placed in bags, and it delivers the same amount of current. Obviously, the more people walk, the more energy the PEG produces.

According to producer estimates, the mobile charger is able to supply approximately 80 percent of the power requirements of an average cell phone within 1 hour of walking or strolling. Weighing only about 9 ounces, the nPower PEG can easily be transported anywhere, and can be attached on the hip of the wearer, so as to create a comfortable experience also. To power up your gadget, simply insert the jack into the device, and start walking. Physics will do the rest.

From an environmental standpoint, such a device is to be saluted, as it represents a new way of reducing one's carbon footprint. Recharging batteries via the PEG would mean far less electricity consumed from indoor outlets, which, in turn, would place a lower strain on electrical power plants to generate energy, decreasing the amounts of fossil fuels burned in the process, and clearing the atmosphere.

The only drawback of the device is its salty starting price, averaging at about $150, meaning it's out of the reach of many people. Manufacturer Tremont says that lowering the price in the future may attract more customers, looking for a cheap way of recharging their devices. However, despite the price, the company says that those who invest in one of its PEGs will get their money back shortly, because they will save a great deal on the electricity bill at home.
