A new Linux distribution based on Fedora is out

Chapeau is a Linux distribution based on the Fedora workstation edition, and its developers are working to release a new version that is based on the latest Fedora 22 that was just released.

Fedora is one of the more popular bases for other Linux distributions, so there are quite a few operating systems out there that are using this distro. Chapeau is one of the newer one, and it's not all that different, although the developers have refined the experience quite a bit. It uses the most of the same core packages, but it's designed a little bit different.

The main difference from Fedora is not the amount of customizations done to the desktop, but the default packages that are available by default. For example, users will find PlayOnLinux and Wine, Steam, VLC, Firefox with Adobe Flash already installed, Pharlap (a proprietary driver helper application from the Korora project), media codecs and DVD playback support, Sound Juicer, Openshot video editor, Darktable, GIMP, also mixer, and a lot of other tools and packages.

It's further worth mentioning that the latest version of Chapeau also comes with Linux kernel 4.0, which is the latest stable branch available right now.

Chapeau 22 stable is almost here

Now that Fedora 22 has been officially released, the developers of Chapeau finally have free reigns to finish the distribution and make it stable. There are still a couple of issues that need to be corrected, but there's nothing major.

"This build is a feature-complete, pre-release look at the next major version of Chapeau. Whilst it is now feature-complete some of features may change before the final release and expect some issues. Chapeau 22 RC is built with packages from the Fedora 22 repos, RPMFusion free & nonfree fc22 development repos, Korora 21 repo for Pharlap, Adobe’s & Playonlinux’s standard repos and of course Chapeau’s own 22 repo," reads the official announcement.

You can download Chapeau 22 RC right now from Softpedia and give it a spin. It works pretty well in virtual machines, so you can test it if you don't want to install it.
