On the downside, the film doesn’t even have a writer yet

Rumor has it that Channing Tatum is about to make his big debut in the superhero genre with “X-Men: Apocalypse” in 2016, which will be his introduction in the role of Gambit / Remy LeBeau to the franchise. However, Gambit is also getting a standalone pic, and this is when Channing promises fans they will fall in love with the character.

Apparently, they want the first installment in the series to be different from all the other superhero movies out there, so Gambit won’t be saving the world like all superheroes do. Does that mean that he’ll be a villain-type of sorts, or that he’ll be at struggle with his identity and not care about the fate of the planet?

We won’t know until later on.

“We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving-the-world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one,” Tatum explains in an interview with MTV News interview.

“We kind of want to introduce this character in a very different way. When you try to do something different, you never really know right off the bat what that is. We’re feeling our way into it. And we really just gotta prove that concept of that person,” he continues.

So the idea is to build a convincing story for the character, show the character for what he really is and only then move to greater things, like having him assume this huge responsibility of protector of man. If you think about it, that’s not really a novel idea (hello, the first “Iron Man”?), but what is new is that all this won’t happen in the first movie.

This sounds like an interesting approach. The downside is that, as of now, the film doesn’t even have a writer, much less a first draft of the script. It doesn’t even have an estimated release date, so it’s going to be a very long while until we get to see this promise come true.
