Cryptic, the developer, has announced that its MMO Champions Online is set to become free to play for all those interested in superheroes and social gaming for the upcoming weekend. Between Friday, October 30, and Monday, November 2, the video game is open to everyone in an effort made by the show runners to attract a wider audience to their product.

In order to take advantage of the Champions Online offer, players need to log into the official site of the MMO, create an account and download the client. Access will be open on Friday.

Two days earlier, on October 27, those who are paying a subscription for Champions Online will also be getting access to the Blood Moon Halloween event for the MMO, which will see players fighting along hordes of zombies. It might not be the most original choice of new enemies for superheroes, but the current love for the undead going around the video-gaming world will probably attract more and more people to the title. The Blood Moon add-on also introduces the all-new Celestials power set.

Champions Online was not extremely well received on launch. Players have praised the character creator as being one of the most detail-bent in video gaming until know, allowing for the creation of very complex and unique characters. The actual gameplay has left a lot of people less than impressed, mainly because of the way Cryptic elected to implement significant changes to the powers and to their utility without listening to the suggestions made by the player community.

If the free weekend works as intended, then some of those who only play the game for three days will become interested in Champions Online and will pay up for a subscription for a month to fully explore the MMO. If it's not a big success, then Cryptic might actually stage more of them to woo players.
