An Ubuntu-based distro designed for Windows 7 fans

Dejan Petrovic, the developer of the recently introduced ChaletOS computer operating system informed us today, February 12, that he just pushed a February 2015 release on his servers, urging users to update to it as soon as possible. The new ISO images are available for download right now (see link at the end of the article) for 32 and 64-bit PCs, bringing assorted bugfixes and improvements.

In case you have been living under a rock lately, ChaletOS is an open-source distribution of GNU/Linux derived from the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and built around the lightweight Xfce graphical desktop environment, featuring a unique design targeted specifically at Windows 7 and Vista users who want to migrate to an open-source OS.

“This system is not too different from Xubuntu, on which it is based, but ChaletOS has a style that everyone knows well, appealing simplicity and an impressive speed. All this will let them to fall in love with this system quickly. Because of its small hardware requirements it will revive some old machines and refresh others, not so old,” was stated on the product’s website.

Based on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and Xfce 4.10

When using ChaletOS, which is based on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and Xfce 4.10, users will find all the applications they need to get started. For example, you will be able to browse the Internet with Mozilla Firefox, stay in touch with friends and family members with the Pidgin instant messenger.

In addition, they can send and receive emails or view the latest news from your favorite websites with Mozilla Thunderbird, view images with Ristretto, listen to online radio stations with Great Little Radio Player, as well as to view movies with Popcorn Time and VLC Media Player.
