The Chakra Development Team, through Anke Boersma, proudly announced yesterday, April 16th, the immediate availability for download of the Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.04 operating system.

Dubbed Archimedes, Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.04 is the second maintenance release for 2012 and it is powered by Linux kernel 3.2.8 and KDE Software Compilation 4.8.2, as well as the latest Calligra 2.4 office suite, Qt 4.8.1, updated sound stack, phonon and krb5 packages.

"Bad news for some, there is no longer a GUI for package-management shipped. Appset-qt, and any other pacman GUI frontend, were not able to handle more complex updates as should, and the team felt it was not correct toward the users to ship such a package, that needed constant warnings." - was stated in the official announcement.

Highlights of Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.04:

· Linux kernel 3.2.8; · Linux kernel 3.0.22 (optional); · KDE Software Compilation 4.8.2; · Qt 4.8.1; · QtWebkit 2.2.1; · Switch to kmod; · tomoyo-tools 2.5; · initscripts were updated to allow testing of systemd; · wqy-microhei is now the default font for Japanese, Chinese and Korean lanaguages.

Chakra GNU/Linux 2012.04 is distributed as DVD ISO images with a nice selection of applications and all the locales, and a minimal CD ISO image that allows users to build their desktop on. Both are availabile for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

About Chakra GNU/Linux

Chakra GNU/Linux was originally based on Arch Linux but, while some of the underlying architecture and the package manager remain the same, packages from Arch are not compatible with Chakra.

Chakra uses the KDE desktop environment and a half-rolling release model, meaning that the core software is updated less often and is considered stable, while everything non-essential is updated frequently to ensure that users always run the latest applications.
