14 DAY TRIAL // On December 18th, Phil Miller proudly announced the immediate availability for download of the Chakra GNU/Linux 2011.12 operating system.
Dubbed Edn, Chakra GNU/Linux 2011.12 is now powered by Linux kernel 3.1.4 and KDE Software Compilation 4.7.4, as well as the latest LibreOffice 3.4.4 office suite, updated mesa-stack, sound-stack and initscripts.
This is the last release of Chakra GNU/Linux 2011.12 named Edn. Starting with the next release, available in January 2012, the developers will include the upcoming KDE SC 4.8 environment, renaming their distro.
"With this third and final Edn release, we are confident, this is the correct way to go. As with any rolling Distro, there is no final ISO, every ISO is just a snapshot of the stable repo's at that time. Edn was based on KDE 4.7, 4.7.4 is the final of this series, and with 4.8 a new name will be introduced." - said Phil Miller in the official release announcement.

Chakra GNU/Linux was originally based on Arch Linux but, while some of the underlying architecture and the package manager remain the same, packages from Arch are not compatible with Chakra.
Chakra uses the KDE desktop environment and a half-rolling release model, meaning that the core software is updated less often and is considered stable, while everything non-essential is updated frequently to ensure that users always run the latest applications.
