The Chakra team, through Neophytos Kolokotronis, was proud to announce on March 12 the immediate availability for download of the third maintenance release from the Chakra Euler series, Chakra 2015.03, which brings a number of improvements and updated software packages.

One of the highlighted features of Chakra 2015.03 is that the built-in graphical installer has been updated to allow users to install the distribution in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) systems. Detailed instructions about how to install Chakra on UEFI machines are provided here.

Unfortunately, Chakra 2015.03 sticks with KDE Application 14.12.2 and includes the kdelibs 4.14.5 and kde-workspace 4.11.16 packages. Additionally, the operating system comes with KDE Frameworks 5 and Calligra 2.9.0 office suite. The team explains below why they didn’t switch to the beautiful, next-gen KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment.

“We are aware that everybody is looking ahead into Plasma5 and we are working on the transition, but we believe it is too early for this to be shipped by default and decided to wait for a little bit longer until Plasma 5 has furthered matured and more KDE Applications have switched to Frameworks 5,” was stated in the official release announcement for Chakra 2015.03.

Chakra Linux is still powered by Linux kernel 3.18

Under the hood, Chakra 2015.03 uses Linux kernel 3.18.3, X.Org Server 1.16.4, systemd 218, Qt 5.4.1, the Mesa 3D Graphics Library 10.3.5, Nvidia Video Drivers 346.35, 340.65, and 304.125, AMD Catalyst Video Driver 14.12, Nouveau Video Driver 1.0.1, open-source ATI Radeon Video Driver 7.5.0, as well as Intel Video Driver 2.99.916.

Download Chakra 2015.03 right now from Softpedia. The distribution is available for download as a Live DVD ISO image that includes software packages optimized only for modern 64-bit computers.
