The first wedding anniversary is the paper one, and clocks are being offered as gifts, tradition has it. For rockers Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne, the date of their first year as husband and wife meant upgrading her engagement ring by several carats.

This one is going to be difficult to top in the coming years, but Chad can probably afford it.

When he proposed to Avril in the summer of 2012, he did so with a gorgeous, 14-carat pear-shaped bauble that became the talk of the town the moment she started showing it off in public. Now, she has an even bigger diamond on the same finger, because the first one just got demoted.

Avril took to her Twitter to brag about the amazing and totally surprising anniversary present she got from her man, and also included a photo of her hand with the new diamond engagement ring. Let’s just put it this way: if she took a dip into the pool with that thing on, she’d probably have a very hard time keeping afloat.

“I still can't believe my 1 year anniversary gift. 17 carat emerald cut. Wow. I love my hubby,” she wrote in the caption.

The photo attached to this article is of the first ring, which was designed by Caryn Alpert at Chad’s instructions. There is no designer ID to Avril’s new piece for the time being.

The two met in the spring of 2012 to work on some music together and, as they later told the press, they hit it off immediately. Even though Avril was against the idea of mixing business with pleasure, she agreed to go out on a date with him and, right then and there, realized that, for once, it could be a good thing.

By summer, they were already engaged: their relationship progressed so quickly that Chad’s mother didn’t even get the chance to meet Avril before he proposed.

For the following year, they planned their wedding, which took place at the Chateau La Napoule in Mandelieu, France. The bride wore two different wedding dresses, one white and another black, with a matching veil and a bridal bouquet, of black roses.

For most of the time, these two celebrities manage to stay out of the spotlight but not even they are safe from the occasional divorce rumor. With this photo and this amazing 1-year anniversary present, they have successfully managed to put all breakup reports to rest, at least for the time being.
