On December 1, Karanbir Singh announced the immediate availability for download of CentOS 6.5, for both the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

CentOS 6.5 is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by the Upstream OS Provider, more precisely Red Hat. This is the fourth update in the 6.x branch of the series and comes with lots of bug fixes, updates, and new functionalities.

As usual, users of this operating system can upgrade from CentOS 6.3 or from any other release in the 6.x branch. The process is simple, and all it requires is to run the “yum update” command.

“CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendor's redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.”

“We have decided not to follow the UOP's usage of Installation Codes. All ‘channels’ are available to the System Administrator at time of installation,” reads the official announcement.

Highlights of CentOS 6.5:

• The Precision Time Protocol – previously a technology preview – is now fully supported. The following drivers support network time stamping: bnx2x, tg3, e1000e, igb, ixgbe, and sfc; • OpenSSL has been updated to version 1.0.1; • OpenSSL and NSS now support TLS 1.1 and 1.2; • A number of improvements have been implemented for KVM, which include read-only support of VMDK- and VHDX-Files, CPU hot plugging, and updated virt-v2v-/virt-p2v-conversion tools; • The Hyper-V and VMWare drivers have been updated; • Evolution has been updated to version 2.32 and LibreOffice to version 4.0.4; • A number of features have been deprecated, which includes matahari, mingw-gcc, mingw-boost, mingw32-qpid-cpp, python-qmf, python-qpid, qpid-cpp, qpid-qmf, qpid-tests, qpid-tools, ruby-qpid, and saslwrapper.

A few problems are still lingering, but you can check the complete list of changes and new features in the official announcement. Download CentOS 6.5 right now from Softpedia.
