The CentOS development team, through Karanbir Singh, proudly announced last evening, July 10th, the immediate availability for download of the CentOS 6.0 operating system.

The new CentOS 6.0 operating system is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 distribution, and it brings all the features that are present in the RHEL distro, with which is 100% binary compatible.

The CentOS 6.0 Linux distribution was completely rebuilt using a brand-new build system and library checks, in order to confirm RHEL binary compatibility.

"We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of CentOS-6.0 for i386 and x86_64 Architectures. CentOS-6.0 is based on the upstream release EL 6.0 and includes packages from all variants. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with."

"Since upstream has a 6.1 version already released, we will be using a Continous Release repository for 6.0 to bring all 6.1 and post 6.1 security updates to all 6.0 users, till such time as CentOS-6.1 is released itself." - said Karanbir Singh in the official announcement.

For this release, the CentOS developers decided not to follow RHEL's user operation prohibition usage of Installation Codes. Therefore, system administrators will have all the "channels" available at time of installation.

The following packages have been modified by CentOS, compared to RHEL: abrt, Anaconda, Firefox, Apache, kabi-whitelists, luci, OpenSSL098, Plymouth, report, xulrunner and Yum.

The following packages were removed from CentOS, compared to RHEL: abrt-plugin-bugzilla, redhat-release-*, redhat-release-notes*, rhnlib, rhn-check, rhn-client-tools, rhnsd, rhn-setup, rhn-setup-gnome and yum-rhn-plugin.
