In your nearest South Yorkshire town

There are few people at the moment that haven't heard about legal initiatives that try to prevent the use of cellphones while driving. The latest thing that happened in the middle of this "ban cellphone use while driving" mania is the use of speed cameras to catch every driver daring enough to use its handset behind the wheel.

This means no one living in South Yorkshire (for now) is safe to make a phone call and drive his/her car at the same time without paying a 60 ? fee.

Wondering how the police will be capable to force the drivers caught in the middle of a phone call to pay that fee? By sending a notice containing a photo of that person with its cellphone next to its ear.

That sum seems a little too big? It was smaller, about 30 ?, but the drivers didn't seem to care and continue to make phone calls despite having to pay large amounts of money because of this.

This new fee they'll have to pay is more likely to make them think twice before endangering everyone's safety in traffic just because they can pull their car on a side of the road to make that damned call.

"If officers using mobile cameras see someone using a hand-held phone, whether with their own eyes or through the lens of their camera, then they are fair game," said Meredydd Hughes, the head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Constables.

There is no word yet of this system being installed in the automated camera system always watching over the traffic but, again as she has stated, "that is not to say that we can't change the policy".
