A bill proposed by Senator Carl Kruger might put a ban on cellphones (and iPods) in New York. There aren't too many of you living out there that will be very happy about it but I suppose some of the dumber individuals (the ones not looking sideways when they talk on the phone or listen to music on their iPod and cross the street) will probably thank him for saving their lives. If they remember to take care of themselves after not being allowed to talk on their mobile or listening music while crossing that is.

Looking at the funny side of this whole deal, this probably means the mayor of NYC will have to hire a new law enforcement team to deal with the numerous (and when I say numerous I'm talking about thousands and thousands of people not giving a damn about being interdicted to talk while in the middle of the street) cases of this law being totally ignored.

On the serious side though, if this law project will get approved, it could prove to be one of the worst ideas in the history of USA. I'm not saying they shouldn't take care of the US citizens but there is a very small step from that to utter stupidity.

Kruger has declared that he's "talking about people walking sort of tuned in and in the process of being tuned in, tuned out. Tuned out to the world around them. They're walking into speeding cars. They're walking into buses. They're walking into one another and it's creating a number of fatalities that have been documented right here in the city."

Why wouldn't they think of limiting the speed in the city to, let's say, 30 miles per hour? Wouldn't it be a better way to prevent thousands of people to die each year? Why don't they ban the fast food restaurants that are also the cause of thousands of deaths each year due to heart diseases?

I am sure there are other more stringent problems out there to deal with (drugs, murders, rapes, etc.) instead of banning the use of cellphones because some stupid people don't look for cars while crossing the street.

I know it may sound mean but, what the heck? Just file the cases of the people that ever died hit by a car because they were using a cellphone or an iPod and send them here. They definitely deserve at least an honorable Darwin Award mention don't you think?

I say: let the nature take its course and the "survival of the fittest" principle be applied! Why take care of them if they are too dumb to take care of themselves?
