Some might say that Celine Dion ended 2006 in a somewhat bitter note, once the doctors diagnosed her with a very serious bout of bacterial infection and ordered her to stay at home and rest. The stress of performing five nights per week (and the physical effort it implied) took its toll on the Canadian songbird and she was forced to cancel her shows at Caesars Palace for a period of almost a month.
At the time, the 'A New Day' gigs were canceled because of the singer's poor health; the organizers also announced that she would return to her old schedule by December 28th, after a well-deserved holiday and a period of recuperation at home. They did not mention anything about the show ending for good.
Yesterday, a spokesperson for Caesars Palace said in a press release that Celine Dion's four-year run in Las Vegas is coming to an end. A final date for the show has been set for December 15, 2007, which marks the end of a very successful and lucrative contract for the singer.
Initially, in March 2003, Celine signed in for a period of three years for an estimated $100 million but the organizers extended the contract to also cover 2007. There was no date mentioned for its closing and, now that it finally became public, there was no indication as to what might have led to it.
Sources from the music industry claim that the diva has finally decided to call it a day and to retire from showbiz, as she planned before going to Vegas.
