Until now, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas seemed to hold the key to a successful marriage in Hollywood. Sadly, 13 years after they tied the knot, the two actors have announced they’re separated.

The report comes from People magazine, which claims to have it on very good authority that the two are no longer an item.

Moreover, the glossy writes, the signs have been there since April, for anyone interested to look.

“They've walked red carpets solo, vacationed separately with their kids, and in recent days, Douglas has been relaxing on a yacht off the coast of Sardinia – with Zeta-Jones at home in New York,” People writes.

An insider notes that neither Catherine nor Michael has filed divorce papers yet, but there are hints that this is the direction they’re heading to.

“They're taking a break,” says one such spy, adding that their most recent problems (Michael’s 2010 cancer diagnosis and her stay in rehab for bipolar disorder) could have very well played a part in their decision.

“The stress has taken a toll on their marriage,” the insider adds.

They might still get back together after this but, even if they don’t, both stars are determined to act in such a way as to negatively impact on their children’s lives as little as possible.

“Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, who have two children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10, together, decided to spend time apart soon after he came back from the Cannes Film Festival in May. Zeta-Jones had recently returned from a scheduled second round of treatment to monitor her bipolar disorder,” People magazine says.

As talk of a divorce started spreading online, a rep for the couple has issued a statement to OMG! Insider to stress that such a course of action has not been decided on just yet.

“Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment,” the publicist explains.
