With the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft now out, players can see how the developers at Blizzard have remade some of the most played through areas of the MMO, aiming to both attract new gamers to the experience and to offer a new take on old content for those who have been around since the game launched.
Frank Pearce, who is an executive and one of the co-founders at
Blizzard, has talked about the new old content to Gamasutra as part of a bigger interview, saying, “We call it the brown box, but a lot of the community calls it Vanilla WoW. The content was created years and years ago, before we really knew how to create the best content for the game.”
“The level 1-60 experience really doesn’t have the best content. It’s not putting our best foot forward. This lets us do that for new players,” he further goes.
The Blizzard executive also believes that the remade areas will be interesting to those who experienced in their old form, adding, “Most of the content we’ve revamped is the content people are playing to level up their characters. This gives players who have been part of the community for a while the chance to experience it from a new perspective.”
The developers at Blizzard have also acknowledged the fact that the coming of the dragon Deathwing also poses some problems to
World of Warcraft, making the new zones introduced in Wrath of the Lich King and Burning Crusade seem a bit out of touch with the rest of the narrative included in World of Warcraft.
The company has already said that it planned to create
at least another expansion for its hit MMO, saying that it might deliver it in about one year and add a new continent.
A leaked road map from the Chinese division suggests it might also be prepping a fifth expansion for 2014.
