At the E3 trade show, Konami announced that its Madrid-based Mercury Steam studio was working on a new Castlevania title, called Lords of Shadow. The game is being created in collaboration with Kojima Productions and Hideo Kojima himself is set to oversee it. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is set to be released in 2010 for the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

Konami is boasting that Lords of Shadow will radically change the way players look at the Castlevania series, with a new age being introduced in the history of the game. The developers are saying that the game literally takes place at the end of time. The picture is grim, as the Earth is no longer allied with the Heavens and as the living are being preyed upon as the souls of the dead wander without finding peace.

The main character of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be one Gabriel, a member of the Brotherhood of Light, designated defenders of all the innocents. He has lost his wife to the forces of evil and his soul has been shattered. Gabriel needs to travel through the now destroyed world and use his Combat Cross to take out the rulers of the three factions that are making up the Lords of the Shadow.

Dave Cox, who is a producer on the game, said that “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will take the Castlevania series into brave, uncharted territories, and is a breath-taking adventure that boasts stunning aesthetics, deep and challenging game play, and a truly inspirational voice cast to deliver the games dramatic depth. We are also delighted to be working with Kojima Productions who have supported the development of the game and our intended goals with their keen vision and expertise.”

Konami is pointing out to the people doing voice work on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to emphasize how the game is aiming at a wider audience. Robert Carlyle, of Trainspotting fame, will be Gabriel, while Patrick Stewart, aka Captain Picard, set to play Zobek, with Natasha McElhone also joining the cast.
