If you were a fan of the “Powerpuff Girls” cartoons growing up, we have good news for you: Cartoon Network has announced that it's going to make a whole new series for the three superhero girls starting 2016.

The revived version is going to take Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup back to Townsville to fight crime. According to Aceshowbiz, Chief content officer for Cartoon Network, Rob Scorcher, made the announcement on Monday, June 16, at the 2014 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

“The original ‘Powerpuff Girls’ was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” Scorcher said, adding that “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

Other people in the network's management spoke highly of the cartoon they credit with introducing the concept of “Girl Power” (although the Spice Girls might have a trademark on that), pointing out that when the cartoon first came out, it appealed to a wide range of people, not just children of a specific age.

The original show aired on Cartoon Network between 1998 and 2005, and the last time the Powerpuff Girls saw any new animation was for their tenth anniversary special in 2009, when they got a CGI movie called “The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed.”
