Wireless carriers have been already reported to plan seeking new ways of boosting their revenues, and it seems that selling a wider range of devices beside mobile phones is one of the solutions they might have found. According to a recent report from In-Stat, carriers are expected to become one of the most significant distribution channel for all Internet-connected mobile devices, which includes netbooks and mobile PCs, as well, mainly due to the revenue potential they have.

According to the research firm, the number of such devices that will be sold through carriers is expected to increase significantly in the future, as the service prices will fall as result of increased bandwidth from new technologies. In-Stat forecasts that carriers will sell more than 60% of all Internet-connected mobile devices that will be delivered to the market by 2013.

“In the US, carriers are charging up to $60 per month for a two year contract with the subsidized purchase of a netbook,” says Jim McGregor In-Stat analyst. “While the subsidy costs the carrier $50–$100, it generates $1,440 or more in service fees over the life of the contract.” In addition, the research firm points out that carriers in the EU and Asia offer netbooks with a data contract as well, only that they ask much lower prices than those in the US. Asia-based operators already included MIDs and UMPCs in their offerings, the firm states.

Here are some findings from a recently conducted research from In-Stat: - The total available market (TAM) for Internet-connected devices is projected to grow at a 22.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2013. - 78% of Internet-connected devices will be using processors with integrated multimedia acceleration, including 85% of mobile PCs, by 2013. - In-Stat projects that nearly 31% of notebooks will be sold through carriers in 2013. - The innovation of the mobile market is being driven by four key factors: richer content, network access for communications and content, increased bandwidth to enable this access, and new technologies.
