The Country Music Awards 2014 took place last night in Nashville, and Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood were on hosting duty for the seventh time in a row. Buzz online has it that this was their funniest time so far.

So, as proof, embedded below you will find their opening monolog, which managed to touch on a lot of topics in a bold fashion but without being too rude or nasty. These included a bit of politics, when President Barack Obama got skewered, health affairs, with Ebola, and plastic surgery, in reference to the Renee Zellweger situation.

Taylor Swift, who has her first pure pop album right now, “1989,” was also mentioned, with the duo mourning the loss country music has suffered with her departure. Post-Partum Taylor Swift Disorder is a real thing and it affects millions – but Obama doesn’t care about that, they joked, with a subtle dig at Kanye West too (who said after Katrina that Bush “didn’t care about black people”).

Towards the end of the opening monolog, Brad, who had been told in confidence whether Carrie was expecting a boy or a girl, totally spilled the beans by saying they should name “him” Garth.

In between the jokes, the duo also sang little funny songs, adapted from instantly recognizable hits like Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line” and Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” The entire segment, if you ask me, was just perfect for an awards show: light, polite but also stingy in places, without ever verging on the offensive.

Enjoy!
