Stainless Games, the original creator of the Carmageddon concept, has officially announced that it is working on a new game in the series, called Reincarnation, which is set to be launched during 2012 on a number of unspecified platforms.

The developers are saying that Carmageddon: Reincarnation is at the moment in the early stages of pre-production and that the team will focus on returning the game to its roots, with a lot of dark humor, extreme violence against pedestrians and other cars and a lot of power-ups to collect and use.

Stainless Games aims to launch the game via digital distribution in order to limit the expenses associated with getting the game to players and keep true to its indie roots.

Patrick Buckland, who is the chief executive officer and the co-founder of Stainless Games, stated when the announcement was made, “Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.”

He added, “We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.”

Stainless Games created the first Carmageddon and the sequel, which I remember fondly playing with green blood designed to mask the over the top violence, before a company called Torus Games took over in order to create Carmageddon TFR 2000.

Stainless now has all the rights linked to the franchise, from the name to the trademarks and the gameplay mechanics.

Stainless has recently worked on video games like Risk: Factions, Red Baron Arcade and Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers.

It will be interesting to see whether a new generation of gamers is interested in Carmageddon or whether those who have enjoyed the likes of Burnout, Gran Turismo and Need for Speed will find little to like in the revived franchise.
