After leading Brazil to one of their worst World Cup ever, Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira decided to step down from his position inside the Brazilian Football Federation. And there were a lot of reasons why this decision has been taken. Even if the Brazilian managed to bring his national team its 4th World Cup title 12 years ago - in the United States tournament - the way he prepared this year's team had the worst repercussions on the German tournament.
"After a meeting held this morning with CBF president Ricardo Teixeira, Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira left the Brazilian national
team. It was a joint decision and Parreira will not have, from today, any professional connection with the Brazilian Football Confederation", said the Brazilian Football Federation statement earlier today.
One of the reasons why he was obligated to resign was, by all means, Brazil's humiliating defeat to France in the World Cup quarterfinals. Playing an "old" team like France, Parreira had the chance to get revenge for the 1998 World Cup final - when Brazil lost to France 3-0. Still, the coach had no choice but play Ronaldo, Cafu and Roberto Carlos in the line-up squad, even if part of him didn't want to. Still, the advertising around the Brazilian team often made him favor some players against his will.
The second, and most pressured reason, was the fans' reaction to the Brazilian "performance". Coming in Europe to sustain their favorites, the fans were very disappointed with what happened in the competition. Not only that Brazil lost in the quarterfinals, but they also displayed a pretty "old" and boring football, that made everyone feel asleep.
And a big part of it was because players that reached a pretty impressive number of years refused to stay on the bench. Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Juninho were all supposed to think about the team, more than themselves, and let the others handle the pressure on the field. Brazil's preparation for the tournament was also set on pretty low standards, since the world champions played against New Zeeland and 4th or 5th league-teams from Switzerland.
