On July 22, 2011, moviegoers will experience a one of a kind action movie, featuring a superhero like the world has never seen before. At least, that’s what director Joe Johnston promises fans of the upcoming “Captain America.”
Chris Evans stars as the much beloved Captain America and whether he will get to silence those who said he couldn’t
pull it off will be determined once the film premieres.
For now, fans have only Johnson’s word for it – and he’s saying the movie will basically redefine the notion of a superhero flick, LA Times’
Hero Complex reports.
“Captain American” is action-packed, fun and, above all, it’s set in a timeframe to which audiences don’t normally associate superheroes. Therefore, it should be interesting to watch as well.
“I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago and I just looked at the first cut and there is so much entertainment value – it’s just flat-out fun to watch,” a “giddy” Johnson says over the phone.
Granted, he of all people can’t be objective about the finished product; after all, he made it. Still, from experience, he can vouch that it will take everyone by surprise.
“Maybe I’m somewhat biased – I was there [when we made it] – but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects,” the director explains.
“The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare – it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it,” says Johnson.
“You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva
lot of fun to watch,” he underlines.
Asked about his leading man, the filmmaker admits that he wasn’t really familiar with Chris Evans’ work before getting together for “Captain America,” but that he ended up won over by the actor.
Evans “added layers” to the character that were neither in the script nor in the original comic books, making it into this living and breathing human being that’s fascinating to watch, Johnson says.
