Capcom apparently filed a lawsuit against publisher Koei Tecmo, alleging that the company infringed on some key patents that Capcom owns in as many as 50 of its most recent games.

The news comes from a report on Sankei, translated by Siliconera, revealing that Capcom claims that 50 games from Koei Tecmo are in violation of one of its key patents.

The publisher of Street Fighter is seeking a hefty sum from the publisher of Dynasty Warriors, with the report showing that Capcom is looking to get 980 million yen (around $9.4 / €7.1 million) in restitution, as well as to impose a temporary ban on the sale of several of Koei Tecmo's games.

The patent that the lawsuit revolves around involves backwards compatible content being transferred from a sequel back into a predecessor, with the example cited by Capcom being Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, the standalone expansion that can also be linked to the original Dynasty Warriors 8 in order for gamers to gain access to more stages and characters.

The full content of the patent, filed back in 2002, remains a mystery for now, but Capcom claims that the infringement "has greatly contributed to the sales" of Koei Tecmo's video games.
