Capcom, one of the biggest Japanese video game developers, will follow a new strategy in the near future, and invest in both hardcore titles and mass audience ones, in order to exploit all of the markets.

Capcom, specifically one of its lead game designers, Keiji Inafune, has criticized its local Japanese gaming business for being too closed, and said that if they won't wake up, things will become extremely serious.

As such, Capcom has revealed its new business strategy, and confirmed that it will release titles aimed at a small hardcore market, and others aimed at a larger, mass audience.

According to the company's deputy head of consumer games and the lead producer of the recent Resident Evil 5, Jun Takeuchi, detailed this new plan.

"I think the [future] demand will be characterized by trends that are polar opposites," said Takeuchi. "One of these trends will be games that specifically target a small number of "hardcore gamers".

"The other trend will be popular, big name titles, such as Resident Evil, that target a mass audience and focus on delivering a sense of entertainment."

Resident Evil is definitely an interesting example, but Capcom is certainly betting on the mass appeal of the Resident Evil movies to help make the franchise a famous brand.

"Either way, the important thing for us is to carefully cultivate the elements for both types of games in order to put out titles that people can enjoy playing for a long time."

"Looking ahead, I believe gamers are going to have a sharper eye and become even more selective," he said. "This will eliminate poorly made games from the market, and drive down the number of titles released. The market will no longer be one in which a new game grabs people's attention and interest."

Do you think Capcom is on the right track with its dual strategy?
