Video game publisher Capcom might be getting ready to reveal a major new video game project during the upcoming E3 2014 trade event and a new Resident Evil title is the best bet, according to information coming from a Japanese journalist that has been following the company for a long time.

VG247 quotes the source as saying that the video game developer is looking to make a big impact with its new announcement and that it is planning a major media blitz after the new title is revealed.

Apparently, Resident Evil 7 is at the moment in the early stages of development and Capcom hopes that it will manage to beat the sales number posted by its predecessors, which is close to 6 million copies shipped all over the world.

Previous rumors had suggested that the title might be an exclusive for the Xbox One next-gen console from Microsoft, but the Japanese journalist claims that the title will be offered on the PlayStation 4.

Traditionally, sources in Japan only talk about the Sony home console, but the article does not imply exclusivity, which probably means that Resident Evil 7 will be offered on both next-gen consoles and that it might also be launched on the PC.

Capcom has not responded to the rumors about its new big announcement in any way and the company has not offered any comment on the future of its Resident Evil franchise.

The series became a major success with its fourth and fifth installments, but many gamers were disappointed with the sixth core title, which was launched in 2012 and failed to impress when it came to sales.

Capcom has a tradition of keeping major announcements under wraps until it is able to show gameplay from the title that is impressive enough to get the fan base interested.

At the moment, the company is working on a PlayStation 4 exclusive title called Deep Down, which is set to only be launched in Japan, and which will have a new engine called Panta Rhei.

The tech is designed to use the expanded computing power of the next generation of consoles and could also be used for a new Resident Evil title.

A seventh core game in the franchise might ditch some of the well-known characters in order to introduce fresh faces and might even abandon some of the core gameplay mechanics.

We will know more once E3 2014 rolls around on June 10.
