Video game publisher Capcom was prepared for the reaction that the fan community had to the new look of the upcoming Devil May Cry reboot and the company is still putting its entire support to the development team at Ninja Theory.

Hideaki Itsuno, the director of the franchise since its second game was launched, told Destructoid that, “We knew from the start that whenever you change something like this, there’s going to be some people that will be very interested in that.”

“But it will also scare some people, and make some nervous. We kind of knew that going in, and we steeled ourselves for it,” he also reported.

He added, “What we didn’t want to do is lose sight of our core concept. If you panic and change direction you might forget what you were trying to make to begin with and a lot of times that’s how bad games get worse.

“What we really needed to do is stick to it, and then wait until we could get the game in front of more people and get them to understand what it’s really about.”

When the new look of main character Dante was first shown, the long-term fans of Devil May Cry reacted strongly and some even promised that they would boycott the new game.

Ninja Theory has also announced a number of changes to the core gameplay mechanics of the series.

Capcom believes that, as more players get hands-on time with Devil May Cry, their opinion will change and they will see the quality that the game has to offer.

It seems that the publisher also has plans to launch games based on the original incarnation of Devil May Cry, although Hideaki Itsuno has not offered any clear details.

The new Devil May Cry will be launched on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, probably at some point during 2013.
