Canonical has demonstrated that its Mir and XMir technology is working, prior to the announced integration into Ubuntu 13.10

Canonical has great plans for Mir and Ubuntu 13.10, but users have been unsure whether this technology will be ready in time.

Luckily, Ubuntu Community Manager, Jono Bacon, has demonstrated the XMir offshoot working in various desktop environments, including Unity 7, GNOME 3, KDE, XFCE, and LXDE. XMir is an implementation of X running on Mir.

“Many of you will have seen the recent news about Mir coming to Ubuntu 13.10 in October 2013. For those of you who are unaware of Mir, it is an Open Source display server we are building that we will use across desktops, phones, tablets, and TV.”

“It currently works with Open Source drivers and we are currently in discussions with the major GPU manufacturers to discuss Mir support in their proprietary drivers,” reads a blog entry from Jono Bacon.

Even if the technology hasn’t made its appearance in the daily Ubuntu images provided by Canonical, it’s only a matter of time before it does.
