Canonical Prepares a GNOME Flavor of Ubuntu

In the final day of the Ubuntu Developer Summit for Ubuntu 12.10 that took place in Oakland, USA, the Ubuntu developers talked about a possible GNOME flavor of the Ubuntu operating system.

Yes, that means Ubuntu without Unity. However, if an Ubuntu GNOME Remix distribution will be developed, it will probably have the GNOME Shell interface by default, and not the good ol’ GNOME Classic one that everyone wants.

This GNOME flavor of Ubuntu would contain apps like Abiword and Gnumeric instead of LibreOffice, GNOME Boxes, the Adwaita theme, and probably support for the GNOME Classic interface.

Of course, the distribution exists only in blueprints at the moment, and the developers didn’t yet give it a name. Possible names could be GNOME OS, GNObuntu, GNOME Ubuntu, UbuGNOME, or Ubuntu GNOME, according to a post on Michael Larabel’s website.

I sure hope that's true. Unity has persuaded me to dump Ubuntu, or at least go back to 10.10. Unity is just awful.

what about Gubuntu for the name?

Meh, they should just dump this Unity and GNOME3 disaster and focus on something based on powerful and flexible KDE Plasma

@Seb:
Yeah you may be right, and they just dumped support for Kubuntu.......

To be clear, this is not something Canonical staff are working on, but instead volunteers will be working on this project. These volunteers will contribute in much the same way as other derivatives and flavors, and Canonical will be providing infrastructure to support the project, as we do with our other derivatives and flavors.

Canonical must have thought the community was joking when they said there switching distros. There only doing this to pull back all those who have left and only to keep them under the ubuntu flavor packaging and hoping to pull those in to unity desktop. They are reaping what they have sowed.

Unity -- The "clean end" of the dog turd. I'm sticking with Ubuntu 10.10 and now have switched to Mint. I really wish the developers would stick with what the users want instead of trying to make this so profoundly unpopular and difficult to use...

Unity isn't necessarily "bad" if you're a newbie, but for power users, KDE or GNOME are superior, with KDE having the edge. You simply can do more with it, and I would love to see more focus on KDE for this reason. However, Ubuntu on the tablet definitely makes more sense with Unity.

They have a Gnome version of Ubuntu, it's called Mint ;)

No. It's called Gnome Shell Remix. It's available since 11.10.

I am on the Ubuntu 10.04 and loving it. They will have to drag me away from it by force:)

I just don't understand why Gnome Classic is treated like sun light or holy water to vampire at Canonical. I know more people running Classic than either Gnome or Unity on 11.10 or 12.04 They be better off putting their eggs in to two baskets. Concentrate on either Unity or Gnome for tablets/smart phone and Classic for traditional business laptop/workstation with large screens.

Just to be clear... Canonical is not preparing a Gnome flavor of Ubuntu but instead this a Community led initiative and will be developer from within the Community not by Canonical.

I'm running 12.04 with MATE. It works great - all the Gnome goodness and the 5 year support of the Ubuntu LTE.

Still at 10.10 here, because I'm not in favor of radical redesign of UIs just for the hell of it. Unity would sink my productivity for as long as it took me to become comfortable with it, and I have no good reason to take that hit. Sure wish Canonical had thought it over a bit longer before deciding to force Unity on us all.

Everything will change from time to time. It's a matter of evolution.
BUT - Mutating a desktop into a tablet without touch sensor isn't really progressive, or is it? Unity and GnomeShell are nice eye candy for IUsers but they cripple any desktop. Fortunately LinuxMint-13 will come up with a mature MATE 1.2 to preserve the future of the desktop.
