Canonical has finally settled on a release date for the Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) and the previous, temporary date announced has been changed by a week.

Shortly after the launch of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Canonical started to work on the next version of Ubuntu, 14.10. This is quite normal and the development cycle for Ubuntu is about six months. Also, the version number of Ubuntu says that it has to arrive in October.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS launched right on time, on April 17, but that wasn't a regular release date for this distribution. Usually, Ubuntu operating systems tend to arrive later in the month, which is exactly what is going to happen with Ubuntu 14.10.

The previous launch date for Ubuntu 14.10, which was only temporary, was October 16, but now it has been moved to October 23. The release schedule for the next Ubuntu version has been finalized and it looks like all the pieces are in place.

“I got several plus ones and no objections to wiggling the release by a week to accomodate Linux Plumbers attendees, so I've gone ahead and done that and removed the scary DRAFT header from the page,” said Canonical's Adam Conrad.

The first Alpha is scheduled to appear on June 26 and the second one on July 31. You have to keep in mind that Ubuntu itself will not have an Alpha release. This type of launch was discontinued a while back and only some of the flavors continue to respect this schedule.

This doesn't mean that users can't download the development version of Ubuntu 14.10. In fact, Ubuntu users will find that a daily build of their favorite distribution is available for download at all times.

The first Beta is set to arrive on August 28 (only the flavors) and the second and final Beta, which also includes Ubuntu, will ship on September 25.

Ubuntu 14.10 will be a very interesting release because the developers will definitely try to make some changes. It's possible that Unity 8 will be ready for a better experience on the desktop and it looks like that users might even get a separate flavor that only comes with Unity 8, although that one is mostly aimed at developers.

The next Ubuntu distribution has been in development for a couple of months already and you can take it for spin. You can download the Ubuntu 14.10 daily build right now from Softpedia.
