On May 18, Canonical announced a new service, Ubuntu Advantage Storage, which is designed as a software-defined storage support service tailored for cloud providers and providing a vast area of storage solutions.

Offering a unique metered pricing model, Canonical's new 24x7-supported software solution relies on proven Software-defined storage (SDS) technologies like Ceph, SwiftStack, and NexentaEdge, which are included in the initial offering. Also, Canonical promises that a share of the profits will go to the upstream open-source storage projects.

"We are privileged to support some of the world’s largest open storage clusters, and are now expanding our offerings to meet customer preference for on-demand usage-based pricing, which helps customers get started," says Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and Canonical. "Fully automated management and integration enable us to deliver a first class experience from day one, even for smaller clusters."

Highlights of Ubuntu Advantage Storage

Among the highlights of the new Ubuntu Advantage Storage services, we can mention fully supported scale-out storage solutions based on open-source technologies like Swift and Ceph, as well as third-party providers like NexentaEdge and Swiftstack, 24x7 support with security patches, software and stability updates, management and deployment tools.

Furthermore, Canonical's new Ubuntu Advantage Storage software-defined storage offers services performed by cloud experts that have real-world experience, and unique cloud-style pricing, which means that customers will only have to pay for content stored, not disk space. Also, the service offers full access to knowledge base and reference architecture.

A dedicated web page has been set up for Ubuntu Advantage Storage on the Ubuntu website, where potential customers can learn more about Canonical's new cloud offerings, and why should they choose Ubuntu Advantage Storage for their businesses. A demo can also be requested on the same website.
