Canonical Drops Support for Kubuntu

Jonathan Riddell sadly announced a few hours ago that Canonical will no longer support his work on the famous Kubuntu operating system, starting with Kubuntu 12.10.

Canonical intends to treat Kubuntu like any other Ubuntu derivative, such as Xubuntu, Lubuntu or Edubuntu, supporting them with infrastructure.

"This is a big challenge to Kubuntu of course and KDE as well. The practical changes are I won't be able to work on KDE bits in my work time after 12.04 and there won't be paid support for versions after 12.04."

"This is a rational business decision, Kubuntu has not been a business success after 7 years of trying, and it is unrealistic to expect it to continue to have financial resources put into it." - said Jonathan Riddell in the mailing list announcement.

Therefore, if you guys care about the future of Kubuntu, this is a very good time to step up and join the community, helping Kubuntu stay alive!

"I hope and expect Kubuntu can continue. I encourage Kubuntu devs to apply to UDS so we can have discussions on how to continue it and keep the dream alive."

I've just started using KDE, first with Kubuntu, but now I've switched to the new Linux Mind KDE, which I'm glad to have done. Not only does it seem to work more seamlessly than Kubuntu, now it appears more resources will be put to developing it than to Kubuntu.

Linux Mint KDE Edition IS Kubuntu with some extras thrown on top. If Kubuntu suffers, so will Mint KDE.

I now have a Ubuntu working how I like it, Thanks to Softpedia and KDE 4.8, having spent hours trying to get Gnome and Compiz to work together. I now have a desktop that has the best of Mac OSX, Windows and Linux, it would be sad to lose Kubuntu. Ah well there is always Mint.

I don't think that people realize that Mint KDE is just Kubuntu with some Mint utilities and a different background. If Kubuntu suffers, so will Mint KDE.

That is a bad news, since Kubuntu KDE works fantastic, I built a O/S on OpenSuse Studio, and Since I like KDE I Built it base on it, There are a lot of Very Good Packages. I hope They Change their Mind and Canonical will Keep Support of Kubuntu. : (
