14 DAY TRIAL // Late last month, rumor brought about by a highly trusted source claimed that Nikon was prepping a medium format camera, which will have the Sony 50MP CMOS MF sensor at its core.
The camera could make an early debut at Photokina 2014 in September, but in all possibility, it won’t be the only new-born medium format camera on the grounds.
According to the latest info coming from the ever-active rumor mill, Canon is in the process of developing a medium format camera, as well.
Insider sources reported by the reliable Northlight-Images said that the company was asking some of their important users and customers how they felt about medium format cameras.
Canon has asked its “key users” to answer truthfully to a bunch of questions in a survey. The device maker inquired about the image quality of cameras, lenses, the way photographers are making use of their photo gear. Moreover, it also wanted to find out what sort of lenses they would be interested in seeing in the future.
But more interestingly, the company also slipped in some questions about medium format cameras. According to the source, this is something new coming from Canon but more details weren't revealed.
Since Photokina 2014 is coming up, it’s natural to assume that the device maker is getting ready to release something interesting at the event. Could the medium format camera be one such product?
Even if the device does not show its face for the whole world to see at the event in Germany, it might still be offered to a handful of select photographers to try out during the event.
Still, it’s quite a stretch to assume a questionnaire and a simple reference are enough to prove the existence of such a camera. It might be that Canon is still in a stage where it is considering whether such a product is a good idea or not, so that’s why it is asking its biggest fans.
Since the Nikon medium format camera is expected to arrive with a Sony sensor, could we expect the same from Canon?
The Japanese manufacturer has been supplying its chunky megapixels for cameras such as the Phase One IQ250, Pentax 645Z and Hasselblad H5D-50c – all three being MF cameras with CMOS sensors.
But if Canon doesn't reveal the medium format camera at Photokina, it will surely have other surprises in stores for us (more or less). For example, the company is expected to debut its 7D replacement.
