Not ready to offer repairs

Following the leaked letter to retailers in which they were stopping shipments and recalling all units currently on the market, Canon Europe have issued a public statement acknowledging the autofocus issue of the professional 1D Mark III DSLR.

"Why do I experience inconsistent Auto Focus (AF) behavior with my EOS-1D Mark III?", the entry reads. You might know by now that the issue refers to the inconsistency of the AF tracking when using the Artificial Intelligent (AI) servo continuous shooting mode. This is occurring predominantly under high temperatures.

"Canon has found that some cameras have an adjustment problem with the mirror for AF. The adjustment problem means for the affected products that the focus is not stable or that the Auto Focus tracking is not right when using the AI servo continuous shooting under high temperatures in particular", Canon informs.

However, not all 1D Mark III units are affected by the AF issue. Canon mentions that only those with serial numbers from 501001 and 546561 might contain one of the AF mirrors with the adjustment problem.

Unfortunately, if you own a unit affected by the AF issue you'll have to wait until late November to fix it as Canon is not ready to offer repairs. The good news is that these reparations will be free of charge.

Further details will be announced on Canon's service page so you should visit their web site or read our news to be up to date.

The EOS 1D Mark III was announced in late February as a replacement for the EOS 1D Mark II N. The new model offers a 10.1MP CMOS sensor, a whopping 10fps burst speed, 2 DIGIC III processors, a Live View feature, Canon's new cleaning system and a new autofocus system with micro-adjustment and adjustable focus-tracking sensitivity.
