The new shooter takes advantage of a 50.6MP sensor

As we were telling you last week, Canon is treating its fans with something new and exciting. Aiming quite high with its latest products, the photo gear maker has launched the Canon EOS 5DS (and 5DS R) as the world’s highest resolution full-frame DSLR cameras.

That sounds nothing short of impressive and Canon achieves it by virtue of introducing an amazing 50.6MP sensor.

The difference between the two models is that the EOS 5DS R lacks a low-pass filter which is used to bestow greater sharpness on images.

Canon's new DSLRs are much more potent than its previous models

Consider the fact that Canon’s previous highest resolution DSLR offered 22 million pixels, but the newcomers almost double that offer.

With so much resolution on board, photographers will be able to shoot even 19MP images even if they choose to utilize crop mode and lenses for APS-C sensors

The EOS 5DS and 5DS R are built around a dual Digic 6 image processor and can shoot at 5fps burst rate. ISO capacity is expandable between 50 and 12,800.

The two cameras also contain a 61 point AF system with 41 cross-type AF points. Apart from that, the shooters bundle a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor, built-in intervalometer and bulb time which allows photographers to capture time-lapse images and long-exposure images.

You have 100% field of view through the viewfinder, dual SD and CF card slots. On the back lies a 3.2-inch, 1040k dot display, which helps you compose shots better.

But in the video department, the camera doesn't impress too much with Canon betting on the huge sensor onboard to incite customers to pick up these new DSLRs up.

The devices offer 1080p shooting at 30fps and 720p at 60fps. There’s no mic input or HDMI, which might be quite disappointing for some, especially taking into consideration a lot of people are using their high-end DSLRs for video capturing purposes.

When will the new models be available for purchase?

Canon says that both cameras with be made available starting June 2015. The 5DS will go on sale for $3,699 / €3,232 while the 5DS R will go on sale for $3,899 / €3,407.

Canon also rolled out a new 11-24mm, f/4L USM lens, which will also cost you quite a bit of cash. It will be available later this month for $2,999 / €3,621 a pop.
