Nikon launched the D810 not so long ago and the general consensus is that Canon will provide a successor for its 5D Mark III camera in the year to come, in order to compete with the D810.

Last month we brought you an interesting piece of information regarding the specs of the upcoming device. According to the rumors, Canon was said to be bestowing 4K capabilities upon the 5D Mark III replacement, something that naturally got a lot of people excited.

But as it often happens with rumors about upcoming products, things get shifted around before the official announcement actually comes. So after we told you that Canon 5D Mark IV would come equipped with 4K, we have to burst your bubble.

According to a relevant, trusty source, the upcoming DSLR will not be 4K-ready, but you’re going to see the feature in Canon’s Cinema EOS family of products.

For those who don’t remember, the Canon Cinema EOS series incorporates camcorders and DSLR products. The EOS 1D C is one such product that can record 4K along with the EOS C500 camcorder, so those who really want 4K onboard and are Canon fans might want to check out the 1D C.

The other family members, the C100 and C300, lack this capability. If Canon ends up adding 4K to products such as the 5D Mark III, it might mean that the company will have to pull the plug on the Cinema EOS series.

But we shouldn't worry about that, since CanonRumors claims that 4K won't probably be added to the new DSLR.

Of course what we’re telling you here is solely based on rumors, as Canon hasn't said anything about any plans of announcing the 5D Mark III successor, but this is what usually happens, the producing company is silent until the end.

4K might not get included in the Canon 5D Mark IV because the camera is mostly aimed at photographers and not videographers. This is attested by the fact that mostly photo fans are purchasing the current 5D Mark III.

According to numbers provided by a market research firm, only 10% of customers have purchased the 5D Mark III for its video capabilities. So Canon might be taking the same route Nikon has gone down on with its D800 and D800E cameras. The company might increase the megapixel count in order to cater to the needs of photographers.

Anyway, as we wait on the upcoming camera, you should know that the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is currently up for grabs on Amazon for the considerable price of $3,200 / €2,387.
