It seems that the latest Canon EOS 5D Mark III firmware version 1.2.3 has affected some of the functionality of third-party batteries, making some of them incompatible with the digital SLR.

According to CanonRumors, after the latest firmware upgrade, some 5D Mark III owners reported that each time you put an aftermarket battery into the camera, it shows the following message “Communication with the battery is irregular.”

In response to this issue, a Canon official explained that they chose this solution in order to make all counterfeit batteries sold under a fake Canon logo incompatible with the EOS 5D Mark III.

Some aftermarket battery vendors have already addressed this problem and released new models that are 100% compatible with the new firmware.

Earlier this week, we were talking about the latest Nikon firmware update for their D3100, D3200, D5100 and D5200 digital SLRs that also made a few third-party battery models incompatible with the aforementioned DSLRs.
