This being a rugged photo and video capture device

If you are not familiar with the Canon EOS-1D C camera, know that it is a photo and video capture device shielded against the weather and equipped with all the technology needed to record accurate, clear images in less than friendly conditions.

In other words, it is a high-end camera for whose safety you don't need to fear, because it can withstand bad weather just fine.

This is owed to the magnesium alloy casing that is sealed against the elements. You should still avoid dumping it in a lake, but dust and rain or drink spills won't harm it.

Considering what kind of hardware exists on the inside, and the price, the rugged body is a very good thing indeed.

Which brings us to the good news: starting tomorrow, Sunday, February 1, 2015, the device will sell for $4,000 / €3,544 less than before.

That still leaves it with a price tag of $8,000 / €7,089, but having a third of the price slashed from the total is no small matter.

The tech specs of the Canon 1D C Cinema Camera

The Canon 18.1 Megapixel Full-Frame CMOS Sensor is the main element here. Being a Full-Frame sensor, it supports Canon EF and EF Cinema lenses and offers better signal-to-noise ratio than normal.

It also allows for photos to be recorded in burst mode at a speed of 12 frames per second (12 fps for short). Needless to say, video recording can be done in high quality as well, up to 4K resolution.

More precisely, it is saved in 4K Motion JPEG YCbCr 4:2:2, 8-bit files. To elaborate, the films is caught in a cropped-sensor configuration at 24fps in YCbCr color space and ratio of 4:2:2 and 8-bit depth, with accurate color and luminescence.

We have dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors to thank for most of this, as without them the visuals coming in through the CMOS sensor would not make it to memory in such a good state. You can even enable the Canon Log gamma setting to maximize dynamic range and provide wire exposure latitude. This mode makes it easier to edit the film later, which is good for cinematographical post-production.

Practical applications

The Canon EOS 1D C Cinema Camera name pretty much says it all really, this is a product that film studios are the ones likely to get the most benefit from.

Of course, large price cuts like this often precede the launch of a newer, even better camera, so film makers might want to hold off on buying it just in case.
