Canon is known for lots of innovations in the digital photography field and, for that, it is ranked first among Japanese companies for the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2013, with a 3,825 total approved inventions.

Japanese website Egami has just uncovered a new patent filed by the Nippon camera, optics, and photographic equipment manufacturer that shows a new type of diaphragm with a curved design.

The new Canon curved diaphragm is created to match the curvature of the lens and can shorten the length of the optical axis by a few millimeters. This might not sound like much, but it might be a good addition to the optical construction of future Canon lenses.

Recently, Canon filed other patents that include 4 new lenses designed for the EF-M mirrorless mount, stabilized versions of the 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2, and 135mm f/2.8 lenses, and a new 11-24mm f/4 lens designed for full-frame digital SLR cameras.
