Canon yesterday announced three new compact models that share most features and can only be set apart by a few, namely optical zoom and LCD size.

Before we check out their specs, it's worth noting that all three point and shoots feature Motion Detection Technology, Optical Image Stabilization, Face Detection Technology, and the proprietary DIGIC III imaging processor. Moreover, all three are based on a 10-megapixel 1/2.3" CCD unit.

The PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH boasts the most generous optical zoom and therefore is the most versatile of the three models. Its 5x value covers a picture angle equivalent to that of a 37-185mm lens mounted on a 35mm camera. Images can be composed and reviewed on an 2.5-inch PureColor II LCD display.

On the other hand, both the SD790 and the SD770 models come with a 3x optical zoom lens that covers a picture angle equivalent to that of a 35mm-105mm on a 35mm camera. Apart from the slightly different design, it's worth noting that the PowerShot SD790 is fitted with a 3-inch PureColor LCD II display, while the SD770 has the same 2.5-inch solution as the SD890.

According to the press release, the PowerShot SD770 IS boasts the thinnest body of any optically image stabilized ELPH model ever produced, featuring a slimmer yet higher capacity battery pack, which actually increases the number of photos that can be taken on a single charge to approximately 300 images.

The PowerShot SD890 IS, SD790 IS and SD770 IS Digital ELPH cameras are scheduled to arrive in early April, end of March and mid-April respectively. Each of these new camera kits include a battery pack and charger, a 32MB SD memory card, a USB interface cable, an AV cable, a wrist strap, and Canon's software suite. Each kit carries an estimated retail price of $399.99, $349.99 and $299.99 respectively.
