4K cameras have slowly become pretty main-stream. So much that some companies have taken to launching 6K-ready products and talking about developing impressive 8K products.

Even if 4K seems to be everywhere these days, some giants of the photographic industry like Nikon or Canon haven’t expressed too much interest in this segment. However, 2015 is the year when they plan to catch up with the rest of the crowd. Well, Canon is at least

Canon is prepping multiple 4K updates

According to news reported by Canon Rumors, a slew of new 4K-ready Canon cameras will see the light of day in 2015. And the sources familiar with the matter say they are going to be part of the EOS DSLR, Cinema EOS and VIXIA families.

When can we expect to see the new Canon 4K cameras? Insiders claim the first model boasting these capabilities will launch sometime early next year, so it wouldn’t be a far cry if we said expect it in time for the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 (CES 2015) or CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015.

Canon is said to apply a refresh to most of its lineups throughout 2015, with an emphasis on the ones we already mentioned.

For those who don’t know, the VIXIA series is made up of camcorders, so the addition of 4K will prove to be a great asset for videographers.

The C300 and C500 models will thus be replaced by newer models, while there’s a possibility for the 1D C to see a substitute too.

Before you say anything, the C300 and 1D C are already capable of shooting at 4K, but the newer models might up things in this department a little bit.

We could hypothesize, the Canon C500 Mark II might even be released with 6K support, just like the ALEXA 65 cinema camera, but all this is just a bunch of speculation at this point, so take it with a hint of salt.

Last but not least, the 5D Mark IV and 1 D X replacements have been rumored to come with 4K, but things weren’t too certain back then. The new report seems to indicate this will be the case, in the end.

Canon 7D Mark II might get 4K too, via a software update

To conclude, we’ll throw in another piece of hot info. Remember the Canon 7D Mark II? The camera just launched at Photokina as the company’s EOS DSLR flagship with APS-C image sensor.

Since the device didn't launch with 4K, rumor has it a big firmware update is coming in 2015 which will be bestow the missing capabilities on the camera.
