Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne won the Palme d'Or, for "The Child", a story of a 20-year-old delinquent thrown off by sudden fatherhood. Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers", about an ex-womanizer who learns he has a teenage son, won the runner-up Grand Prix.

The other big winner was Hollywood actor Tommy Lee Jones, who directed his first film that has gone on to win best screenplay and best actor for Jones himself.

"The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" explores life along the American-Mexican border, and Jones plays a grumble ranch foreman out to give his dead friend a decent burial.

The jury for the sidebar section "Un Certain Regard", chaired by American filmmaker Alexander Payne ("Sideways"), gave the award to director Cristi Puiu's Romanian drama "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu," a story of a 63 year old man who gets sick and who dies after he had been sent from one hospital to another.

Emir Kusturica, the president of the jury at this year's Cannes film festival, was not satisfied with the movies and made no secret of his disappointment: "We had a selection where I think the average wasn't very high," he told a final news conference. "I felt that most of the films were a little bit less good than I expected."
