The Cannes Film Festival on a YouTube Channel Near You

YouTube is definitely the most popular website, where a user can find all sorts of short videos, posted by users worldwide looking for fame. But now you can even see ten short movies which are featured at the Cannes Short Film Corner. According to YouTube's "Broadcasting Ourselves" blog, users can tune into NFB's YouTube Channel and view the selected movies.

For those among you who aren't aware, the Cannes Film Festival is one the oldest film festivals in Europe. It is held annually in the town of Cannes, France, at the "Palais des Festivals et des Congrès". The participants at Cannes compete for the Festival's most prestigious award, which is known as "Palm d'Or" or Golden Palm. This year, the Festival will take place from 14 to 25 May.

One week before the Festival's doors open, YouTube allows its users to view these short movies, without them having to go to France in order to do so. The NFB's YouTube Channel is owned by the National Film Board of Canada's Online Film Competition that, in partnership with YouTube, has made the viewing of these short films possible. The movies are finalists chosen from a total 650 films from over 40 countries.

One of the most interesting thing is that film lovers will be able to vote for the featured films, using YouTube's popular 5-star rating. According to the YouTube blog, the winner will nab a professional DV camera and a portable computer with post-production software. Besides allowing the users to view the short movies, before the festival begins, YouTube also enables them to see what being a film juror feels like.

Besides the obvious benefits YouTube provides for its users, this action is also a way to make the public aware of the creations of these young talents. Among other things, the Cannes Film Festival is known for promoting young talents who otherwise find little means of making a name in the industry for themselves.
