'Leading exporter of bootlegged films and mod chips for game systems.' And is it the only one?

Publishers' and developers' worst nightmare is...can you guess it? That's right, piracy. Efforts in keeping copyright laws obeyed are in vane. Almost every day, "twisted minds" come up with a software that literally rewrites the company's programming on the gaming system they have developed and game sales drop shortly after, to their discontent. Take the PSP for instance. Not like the "big consoles" (the PS2 or the PS3) that require hardware patching and fancy wiring to be modded, the handheld only needs the 3.10 OE-A (OE standing for Open Edition) firmware, the latest developed by 'homebrew' developer Dark_Alex.

Not only does it allow the PSP to run pirated discs, but it can even run other sorts of applications, speed up the processor, make maximum use of the display's resolution and brightness level, all this without having to connect the power adaptor. Of course, it eats more juice but nobody's complaining.

All this being said, everyone should know that recent investigations have revealed that Canada is the capital city of piracy and that it is "a leading exporter of bootlegged films and mod chips for game systems" or so says Grievous. What about China, Russia and the Balkans? You can practically get any pirated software for 3 euros in Russia did you know that?

Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) includes trade groups, such as the Entertainment Software Association, the Motion Picture Association of America, and the Recording Industry Association of America. IIPA's guess is that "Canada remains far behind virtually all of its peers in the industrialized world with respect to its efforts to bring its copyright laws up to date with the realities of the global digital networked environment. IIPA added that "even the major developing countries have progressed further and faster than Canada in meeting the challenge."

Since when did Canada become the "piracy heaven?" I mean, did detective Colombo work late hours on his advanced computer system, surfing forums and investigating if Canada's teenagers are planning evil schemes? Not likely. Although, Canada may host a great number of bad intended developers and evil geniuses, that even go as far as sending shiploads of modding equipment abroad, it can very well be the case in numerous places on this little planet of ours and you don't need a magnifying glass to pin point them.
