It's almost the end of the week but the effects of the Super Bowl are just beginning to show. Of course, we're not talking about being tired or not wanting to go to work, but about Prince's halftime performance. Although initially it was considered the best performance of the last couple of years, now it turns out that some people, with nothing better to do, have already started bitching (you can't say they're complaining!) about how Prince used his guitar as a phallic symbol and about how he offended them...
Of course, they are only a few but their number doesn't seem to matter. It was more than enough to file their complaints at CBS to start a real 'controversy'. Actually, I am not sure if the term is used appropriately in this context seeing that no one is of the same opinion with them. Aside from a couple of obscure newspapers which took the story and turned into something like 'Jeez, Prince and his penis shocked the Super Bowl viewers', the rest of the media outlets seem to agree that those 'offended' are just people with nothing better to do than to stir up s**t and see sex (and sexual connotations) where there is none to be seen.
The point is that those people in question seem to have forgotten that funk is all about sexuality and that Prince's past shows and songs have always been about the other word that also begins with an 'f-'. From this perspective, we can only hand it to the diminutive artist for completely toning down. Then again, there are other things people who are so easily offended should consider before jumping to conclusions.
First off, a male performer that also plays the guitar will always use said instrument as an extension of his body. Because the guitar is situated at midlevel, the performer will give it a phallic symbol. And we have to look no further than Prince himself for an example: back in the '80s, his guitar had a special device attached to it that made it 'ejaculate' (spurting water) when he reached the climax of his hit 'Let's Go Crazy' (which, by the way, was not about one's mental health).
The conclusion can be only one: people will do anything and will look at everything from the wrong perspective just to have something to complain about. It's called bitching for the sake of bitching alone. Come on, this is entertainment, this is Prince and this is his sexually-laden music! But to take a guitar, seen through a backdrop and cry 'Malfunction!' is a bit too much.
My question stands: do you see Prince's penis? Are you offended? Because, if you don't and if you aren't, you have nothing to worry about. It only means that you're normal, just like the rest of us.
