Camino 1.6.1 is now available for download. The new version fixes a series of bugs, among which the crash when attempting to add a search engine that uses POST. The updated Mac OS X-optimized web browser also packs improvements and additions. Click HERE to upgrade now, or read on for the details.

Camino has been specifically optimized for use under Mac OS X with a Cocoa user interface, and powerful Gecko layout engine. It is very simple to use and sports an uncluttered window. It also offers the features you expect from a modern browser (tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking settings) but, as The Camino Project folks put it, "you may still encounter bugs."

Camino is only stable enough to use for day-to-day tasks, such as web browsing and... well, web browsing, therefore you should always keep backup copies of important data that you use with Camino, such as your bookmarks.

So, let's see what version 1.6.1 has brought, shall we?

First of all, as noted above, Camino will no longer crash when attempting to add a search engine that uses POST. That's generally good, everyone can agree. What else? Oh, yes. Camino now displays more useful error messages when it is unable to add a search engine, but also supports a wider variety of search engine definition files.

Restored compatibility with Adobe Dreamweaver and other applications that use a deprecated AppleEvent to open documents in Camino has also been added. Advanced users should note that command-period will now close the Find toolbar on Mac OS X 10.5, while the code used to access the Keychain now sports "improved robustness," according to the release notes.

Again, here's where you can nab yourself the latest version of the simplest web browser for Mac OS X. You will need 50 MB free hard drive space. We'll keep an eye out for future updates.
