Because we still live in a world in which it seems unconceivable that a woman could lead a very happy and satisfying life without ever dreaming of motherhood, Cameron Diaz is again forced to answer a question she’s been asked many times in recent years: does she really not want to have babies?

The 41-year-old actress is the cover girl for the latest issue of Esquire magazine, which is meant to promote her new comedy film with Jason Segel. She also sat down for a chat with the same media outlet and, after some talk about her career, growing old, and her new projects, the topic of children did come up.

If she’s ever beaten about the bush before, she’s done doing so now. Usually, when actresses of a certain age are inevitably asked about any baby plans, they stick with the old “we’ll see what happens, if and when it happens” line – but not Cameron, not anymore.

In no vague terms, she tells the publication that she’s made her decision: babies are not for her, not now nor ever.

“It’s so much more work to have children. To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for — I didn’t take that on. That did make things easier for me. A baby — that’s all day, every day for eighteen years. Not having a baby might really make things easier, but that doesn’t make it an easy decision,” she says.

“I like protecting people, but I was never drawn to being a mother. I have it much easier than any of them. That’s just what it is. Doesn’t mean life isn’t sometimes hard. I’m just what I am. I work on what I am. Right now, I think, things are good for me. I’ve done a lot. And I don’t care anymore,” Diaz continues.

This should put a stop to reports like the one that surfaced immediately after confirmation came that she was, indeed, dating rocker Benji Madden, about how she was so head over heels in love that she’d changed her mind about not wanting kids.

Apparently, though they’d only been seeing each other for a very short while, Cameron had finally realized that her biological clock was ticking and she’d decided that she would have her own bundle of joy by Madden whether he chose to be involved in it or not.

Benji’s brother Joel is married to Nicole Richie, with whom he has two children and the sight of their perfect family life made Cameron understand what she was missing out on, it was said.

According to Cameron herself, as far as she’s concerned, she’s not missing out on anything.
